Sparrow House Ministry is a ministry that operates under the Board of Directors and under the 501c3 umbrella of North Austin Christian Church.
Sparrow House Ministry is a live-in discipleship ministry. Women who have professed a desire to change their lives, agree to commit themselves to this twenty-four hour, seven day a week discipleship program. We believe that spiritual transformation is the fundamental need to live free from addictions and failures of past lives.
These women live in a nice community home, rise to pray, eat, study scripture, work at their own care, receive counseling and serve others throughout the day. They follow a schedule throughout every day and night. Most of these women are coming out of a life of addiction, homelessness or out of incarceration.
Sparrow House Ministry will feed, clothe and house these women at no cost to them. They will get counseling and spiritual training during the first six months. They will not work during this time other than volunteering in helping others through the Heaven’s Harvest food bank. After these months, the women will be helped to find a job during the day. They will be accountable for the money they earn and how they succeed at work.
After a one year period, the women will graduate from the program and begin independent living. It is believed that this year of commitment will reduce prison recidivism and help these women to avoid falling back into addictions and homelessness. In this year of discipleship, these women will have the opportunity not only to get a sustaining job, but also to enter training and education to improve their productivity in society. We attempt to stay in relationship with the women who complete the program through personal and church interactions.
Interview : with Candie Powers
When did you go through the program?
“I came to Sparrow House November 17,2017 I became the leader June 15,2018.”
When did you become the church secretary?
“I started working in the office at NACC in February of 2018”
When did you become the director of Sparrow House? Why?
“I became the director of the sparrow house in April of 2020 because I felt a calling from the Lord to continue my work at Sparrow House. I moved out of the Sparrow House for five months prior to this and felt a strong pull from the Lord to go back. I feel like God is not through using me to help save women and bring them to know Jesus Christ so they can have a future in heaven with him for eternity.”
What is the mission of the Sparrow House?
“I feel the mission is to help women know the Lord, to help them come from a life of death and destruction to a life of eternity with Jesus Christ. To show them how to become a disciple of Jesus Christ. To teach them about God's word and how to pray and to seek the Lord every day.”
What do you get from being a director? Why do you do it?
“It does my heart good to help women who are suffering the way that I was suffering and to show them a life with the Lord, that is fulfilling and peaceful and to help them find eternal life. The biggest reason I do it is because the Lord called me to this and I want to lead by example by being obedient to the Lord. I want to make disciples who will then go out and make more disciples for the Kingdom of God.”
What would you like to see in the next 5 to 10 years?
“I would love to have Sparrow House full of women who are learning to work for the Kingdom of God and to see many women saved from a life of death and destruction. I am praying for the future to have many great leaders that came to know Christ. I would love to look back and know that God used me to raise women to be great leaders.”
